Recognizing that you are a target

Many medium-sized organizations are not aware that they could be the target of cybercriminals. Their data assets are important to these criminals. Despite the size of the company data is attractive to cybercriminals. Small organizations don’t always realize that their assets and data are still attractive to cybercriminals. Cyber threats face organizations of every size. Therefore this calls for organizations to have and adopt cybersecurity best practices. In same breath be constantly aware everyone is a target. In most organizations worldwide security breaches occur due to human error.

 Underfunded cybersecurity teams

In-house cybersecurity professionals are spending most of their time-solving cybersecurity issues in their organizations leaving them with no time or having no time to invest in establishing preventive measures. Some organizations do not avail enough resources to their teams. In with the current trends in cybersecurity, these people need to be well trained but some organizations are not ready to frequently train their staff on new cybersecurity issues. Without the time or resources to focus ahead, cybersecurity personnel may struggle to implement measures that would benefit their security in the long-term. Organizations need to adequately finance their cybersecurity departments to scale their cybersecurity capabilities.

Missing security patches

Some organizations have no clear policies of how often vulnerability assessments should be done. Lack of frequent assessments always leads to the company miss on the existing security patches their pieces of equipment. When vulnerability assessments are done security patches are identified and published to allow the organization to mitigate the identified patches.  

Lax email security

In current age and time, some organizations are not keen on implementing email security strategies an aware of the risks posed by lax email security. Typically email consist of spam filters with guards the user from malicious attacks by cybercriminals. But have been able to circumvent the whole thing and have shifted to utilizing attachments to launch malware on devices and networks. Ransomware is one of the biggest threats eyeing organizations of all type. According to the 2019 Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report findings, ransomware accounts for 24 per cent of the malware inflicting companies today and these over 90 per cent of all malware attacks to the networks is through email.

Losing sight of the ‘backup plan’

The vast majority of companies don’t view backups as part of their cybersecurity strategy. Individuals and organizations often depend on systems or services to keep their data protected and forget to consistently back up their data as a fail-safe.
